Going Hungry is not Great for your Health

when a household is experiencing food
insecurity that means that members are
worried they might run out of food or
they might not be able to afford meals
or they skip meals or they just don’t
eat enough approximately 50 million
people in the United States are food
insecure more than 12 million children
are thanks to the support of the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation we’re doing a
two-part series focusing on the effects
of food and security and food support
programs on nutrition and health before
we talk about fixing the problem though
we need to talk about what food security
is and why it’s important that’s the
topic of this week’s healthcare triage
[Music]
about 50 million people in the United
States lack access to enough food to
live a healthy active lifestyle it’s
been estimated that over 4 in 10
Americans will experience food
insecurity at some point in their lives
which in the ages of 20 and 65 food
insecurity is measured by the USDA with
the survey included in a food security
supplement of the Census Bureau’s
current population survey the supplement
is sent to about 45,000 households who
respond either negatively or
affirmatively to statements like did you
ever cut the size of your meals or skip
meals because there wasn’t enough money
for food and did any of the children
ever not eat for a whole day because
there wasn’t enough money for food
based on these survey responses houses
are assigned to high marginal low or
very low food secure cause the survey
has been sent out every December since
2005 we can see how people change the
responses over time before the beginning
of the Great Recession at the end of
2007 food insecurity in the United
States was present in approximately 11%
of all households and around 18 percent
of households with children as the
recession really got going those numbers
increased to about 15 and 23 percent
respectively and though rates stabilized
again following the end of the recession
in mid 2009 they did not decrease back
to pre-recession levels some people are
more likely to be food insecure than
others those who earn low income or who
have less education tend to have more
food insecurity as do single adult
households other associated factors
include households headed by younger
people African American or Hispanic
people and renters as opposed to
homeowners households with children are
also more likely to experience food
insecurity than those without children
though we’re still trying to understand
the specific causes of food insecurity
it comes as no surprise that job losses
and drops and income are triggers
otherwise a number of factors have been
associated with risk particularly in
children the rate of child food
insecurity is lower than the national
average in places like the Upper Midwest
and the Northeast while they are highest
in the south and generally higher in
rural area
both of which tend to have higher rates
of poverty while we know that increased
income reduces food and security risk we
also know that rates of food insecurity
are high even in homes well above the
poverty level and that well over half of
food secure children live in houses
close to the poverty line data on
factors that are protective against food
insecurity suggested assets such as home
ownership savings and access to credit
significantly diminished the effects of
low income on food security levels as
does living in areas where food and
utilities are less expensive we also
have data on other factors that appear
to be involved according to the 2014
future of children report from Princeton
University food insecurity and children
is often tied to caretaker
characteristics such as physical and
mental health substance use experience
with intimate partner violence current
or former incarceration and education
level children living with a disabled
adult are three times as likely to be
food insecure than their peers likewise
the risk of food insecurity increases
between 50 and 80 percent in children
and households with mothers experiencing
moderate to severe depression families
of children experiencing low food
security also report significantly
weaker social and emotional support
networks somewhat along those lines
marital status has been implicated as a
potential contributing factor children
living with a single parent or a parent
living with another relative or
cohabitating partner are more likely to
be food insecure than peers living with
their biological parents particularly if
those parents are married for children
whose fathers do not live in the home
data suggests that food insecurity risk
decreases when the father provides
consistent financial or in-kind
household support type of child care and
immigration status are also relevant
factors children of mothers born in the
United States are significantly less
likely to experience very low food
insecurity when compared to children and
mothers born outside the United States
in seniors food security status is
affected by similar factors including
low education minority status social
isolation and health problems why is all
this important because eating and eating
well is
necessary for health food and security
is associated with both nutritional and
non nutritional effects and children and
adolescents these include poor health
status poor school performance poor
mental health and poor social skills and
not senior adults many poor outcomes are
associated with food insecurity these
include physical health issues like
diabetes hypertension and hyperlipidemia
pregnant women who are food insecure are
at higher risk of iron deficiency and
food insecure mothers are more likely to
report oral health problems food
insecure non senior adults also report
increased rates of depression this is
particularly true in mothers who are
more than twice as likely to report
mental health problems when food and
secure in seniors food and security is
associated with a decrease in nutrient
intake lower health status and increased
depression it can also cause limitations
and activities of daily living that
makes seniors function like they are
much older than they really are
though results are mixed some studies
also suggest that even obesity is
related to food insecurity perhaps
because high-calorie less nutritious
foods tend to be less expensive a 2007
review published in the Journal of the
American Dietetic Association concludes
that while data on food insecurity and
obesity and children are inconsistent
evidence is much more suggestive of an
association and adults particularly in
women even beyond the obvious
nutritional deficiencies that can result
food insecurity can also contribute an
indirect ways to poor health food
insecurity is stressful and stresses
associated with mental health issues
some theorize that this stress may also
contribute to diseases such as diabetes
through the release of the stress
hormone cortisol which affects fat
storage and of course people with
chronic diseases who have to adhere to
specific dietary recommendations clearly
will have much more difficulty doing so
when they are food insecure this only
compounds the problems they may have due
to diabetes heart failure and a host of
other long-term medical issues a study
published this month in the journal of
General Internal Medicine supports this
idea increased food security and reduced
hypoglycemia were reported for food
insecure diabetic individuals follow
the delivery of medically tailored meals
to be fair much of this data has
significant limitations we clearly
aren’t going to run randomized
controlled trials on food insecurity and
therefore much of the research in this
area is observational by necessity
therefore despite these proposed
mechanisms it’s important to note the
difficulties in understanding the arrow
of causality in most of these
relationships for example it’s difficult
to untangle whether food insecurity
leads to the depression or vice versa or
if the two are a result of some other
factor such as physical illness but in
any case we all know from research and
common sense that lack of access to food
is not good
thankfully we have some safety nets for
this many of which try to address the
problem early on by providing support to
food insecure families with children
even then they’re not perfect that’s the
topic of next week’s healthcare triage
hitch enjoyed this episode you might
enjoy this entire playlist we’ve got on
social determinants of health and why
they’re important and if you want you
can support the show at patreon.com
slash health care triage we’d especially
like to thank our research associate Joe

3 Secrets that will change your mind

Published

on

hi beautiful it’s Nancy from skin
coaching and retreat and today I wanted
to give you a special invitation to two
different workshops that I will be
hosting live in the next two months so
before I get into the details of how to
register I wanted to give you three
reasons why it’s important that you join
one of these workshops so the first
reason is you will come learn how to
shift out of that mindset that keeps you
in those limiting beliefs that tells you
that you can’t do something whether it’s
losing weight or getting into a fitness
routine that you love whether it’s
having great health or maybe having a
successful business and money you will
come learn how to shift out of that so
that you receive the abundance that you
deserve
number two guilt you will learn how to
stop feeling so guilty and I know you
know what that means because we have all
been there
whether it’s feeling guilty after a meal
or maybe a few meals after we eat or
whether it’s not going to the gym or for
us parents that feel guilty of not about
not doing something with our kids
whatever guilt that you’re feeling you
will come learn how to shift out of that
as well and learn how to feel good in
your body and your mind and your spirit
and the third reason is taking action so
a dream without a goal without action is
just a dream right and I am a firm
believer in taking action inspired
action and everything that we do and
that we want to accomplish so on the
call you will come learn how to take
action you will have action steps so
after you leave the call and after the
workshop is over you can jump start your
life your weight loss your business into
something that you are wanting living
your best life
so those are the three reasons now you
can register at skin retreats comm slash
skin events the dates for the workshops
are November 19th and December 17th they
are the same they are 45 minutes it is
they are free so you can register on the
website and I hope you will join me this
these will be live calls and they will
not be recorded so you will have to be
on the call to get all the juiciness so
I hope you will join me and I thank you
for listening and I’m sending you so
much love and light and I’m so grateful
for you and I will see you soon talk to
you later bye

Repair My Mind

Published

on

hi I’m Hannah I’m a 23 year old British
Muslim currently studying in mental
health nursing and I’m hormones away
from qualifying as a mental health nurse
and if you haven’t come across my
YouTube page before I created a video in
2015 discussing mental health within the
Asian community if you’ve got 14 minutes
to spare please watch it I look very
different I’m wearing a hijab my views
are different yet the same to what they
are now I wanted to create a platform on
mental health for quite a long time I
just never kind of figured it out and I
do think I’ve kind of figured it out I’m
still dabbling I’m still doing bits and
bobs but I’m getting there so I’d really
appreciate everybody’s support I’m
currently trying to grow my Instagram
page which is called at repair my mind I
used to have a personal account which
was at Hana Muller but that’s currently
deactivated as I didn’t believe in its
purpose some of these reasons can be
found on my repair my mind Instagram
account and I’m hoping to create a lot
more content of my perceptions of what
mental health is a bit of background I
went to therapy a couple of months ago
from Mae for 10 weeks and that was kind
of like a huge revelation for me where I
was struggling even as a mental health
professional student mental health nurse
we all have our struggles but I was
struggling with my emotions or
struggling with my mind was crying all
the time I couldn’t do have being angry
I was always angry I was always
frustrated and I was being emotionally
reactive where anybody would just say
something I would be very snappy and
even with my patients at work and on
placement I
Villa rolling my eyes he wasn’t happy
unintentionally because I would question
myself why did I say that why did I do
that why did I act this way hence why I
put myself forward because I couldn’t
continue living my life in that way and
their whole mental health label has been
growing on me in a completely different
light to what we’ve been educated what
we’ve been told what we’ve been brought
up in and this is just from my personal
view but I know I come from a very small
city in the northwest of England so I
know quite a lot of our perceptions of
what mental health is is very similar
here however now that I’ve been growing
my platform on Instagram I’ve been
learning I’ve been discussing with a lot
of professionals a lot of more holistic
psychology psychological people that are
much very into the mind body and soul
the ego our inner child which I will
discuss further on if you keep following
me on my channel but I do want to reach
this to those who were like me
struggling them just a typical Asian
girl typical Muslim girl just kind of
growing up and dealing with mental
health problems but I didn’t even know
there were mental health problems and
obviously reach anybody else
young young adults teenagers older
adults just adults in general so please
visit my Instagram account which most of
my content is currently on I would love
your views what do you think I should
include trying to grow this page and I
would HIGHLY appreciate everybody’s
support or anybody’s support on this and
just raise the awareness of what mental
health really is

remedies in brief so today’s topic is

as well I’m sure you will enjoy this
program because it’s going to be very
informative and I will suggest you to
keep watching it till the end so without
any further delay let’s begin and then
what is holistic
and how we can use it in our daily life
[Music]
so holistic health or holistic approach
it consists of various aspects when it
comes to wellness as you can see in this
picture we mentioned body mind and
spirit and I’ll explain to you what does
this mean
holistic refers to considering the whole
person so when it comes to Holley
stiffness diagnosis or assessment the
holistic therapist we not only look at
your physical symptoms but also your
mental or spiritual symptoms as well it
does not focus on an illness or a
specific parts of the body but considers
the big picture of the patient so in a
holistic approach or in holistic
assessment we as you know practitioners
not only look at a patient’s you know
physical symptoms or obviously you know
symptoms but also look at his or her
emotional symptoms as well so that makes
it different from conventional treatment
or approaches and many people you know
feel a lot much benefit in using
holistic remedies now the question is
why to consider holistic remedies what
are some office and you know main
benefits of you know switching to
holistic or considering holistic
remedies many people turn to holistic
remedies or therapies when traditional
treatments usually fail to work so that
is one of the top reasons why we should
consider holistic remedies usually when
you know your usual treatment does not
respond and you don’t feel any
improvement with that holistic medicines
can be beneficial to a person’s overall
and well-being as the approach focuses
on the healing of mind and body and that
explains before that it does not look at
your physical symptoms but it can also
deal with your overall long-term health
benefits wellness and well
as well because for allistic remedies
often long-term healing and wellness
without or with fewer or no side effects
so these are some of the top you know
reasons why people switch to or consider
you know the holistic remedies so they
not only provide your you know physical
improvement but also they also provide
some emotional improvement as well
because many you know medical conditions
they begin the way you perceive about
your health you think about your medical
condition and the more you think
sometimes it gets worse as well but it
doesn’t end here there are some more
reasons to consider holistic remedies as
well these therapies used together with
conventional medicines can ease the
symptoms of many health conditions as
well as lessen some of the negative side
effects of conventional medications as
well holistic medicines not only help an
existing problem but with help prevent
future problems down the line as well so
you know if you consider holistic
remedies they can also help and support
your conventional medicines if you are
already taking something for any medical
condition so they can help and support
they can synchronize with that and it
can improve your overall quality of life
also it can predict and prevent any
future occurrence to your health as well
so it can protect you from any build any
disease or an illness which is down the
line so these are some more you know
reasons why to consider for the stick
the medicine now there are two major
approaches while we you know select or
we go for any holistic remedies number
one complementary remedies these
remedies are used in addition to the
conventional medicines so they can
complement they can support if you have
already been taking any medicines for
any medical conditions but the second
one is something different and that is
Comfort and native remedies and which
are used instead of or in place of
conventional medicines so you can see
the difference between both that
complementary therapies in holistic
approach are those which can support
they can complement you as
resisting you know remedies or medicines
you’ve been taking from your health
provider but you’ve been trying
something for long and they don’t give
you any treatment or any cure and your
symptoms are getting worse and they are
becoming more aggravated and many people
switch to alternative therapies which
means that they consider something in
place of your you know regular
medication you stop them and you start
something new to give it a try and see
if you feel any benefit with that so
complementary remedies and alternative
remedies these are two major branches or
you can say these are two major
approaches when it comes to holistic
health now here we’ll be talking about
most commonly used holistic therapies
you know there are hundreds of different
kinds of holistic remedies but we will
talk here about some of the most common
ones so it starts with usually with
herbal supplements so many people they
go for Harbach supplements when they
want to switch to for the stick out or
the natural healthy also you know
homeopathy which is you know one of the
leading you know remedies or Patties in
the world after you know le petit is
homeopathy which stands number two in
the world when it comes to practice so
homeopathy is also becoming very popular
now in America even in UK and in many
European countries you know many people
they use homeopathy and also in many
Asian countries as well and it’s
providing you know tremendous result
amazing results in many health
conditions so homeopathy is also one of
the leading you know the holistic
approach then it comes acupuncture or
acupressure which is more you know
Chinese basis Chinese
kind of holistic remedies and also one
of the very much practice which is a
very common in in India especially Irina
I already you know approach in holistic
remedies another one which is very much
common and you know historically edited
to orient it from you know Middle East
or in Arabian countries is called
copying or he JAMA and it’s not so very
much popular in many world to the other
countries now reflexology the flea
excited your feet hands here’s different
parts of the body which can also use
stimuli different impulses and can
provide and balance your you know
imbalances or disease it’ll about Israel
then there are different kinds of
massages and you know friends as I
mentioned that I’m making separate
videos on all each of these ballistic
therapies in future so I’m not going to
discuss in detail today
but you should continue watching my
video and in coming videos you and have
a separate video about all of these
different kind of the therapies then
Chinese medicines even lofted therapies
also one of the early TP remedies
[Music]
obviously nutrition because you are what
you eat so health begins with diet
ethical changes all that little
nutrition if you can make that then
magnetic therapy yoga Reiki meditation
also chiropractic color therapy water
therapy or hydrotherapy electric
magnetic electromagnetic therapy
visualization or the image near eternity
so friends these are some of the most
common top-20 you can say holistic
remedies you may have heard some of
these you may have used some of these in
your you know daily life but there might
be some new for you as well in this you
know the slides but definitely we will
talk about each of them in our coming
you know videos today is just an
introduction about general holistic
approach and I will try to focus some of
the main things now there comes some
very important you know aspects of
holistic remedies reports when it comes
to its assessment so while we are doing
any diagnosis or assessment these are
some of the things we considered very
seriously and we much we do detail
so we considered a patient’s physical
symptoms also you know some of the
causes or the cause of that you know
medical condition the emotional symptoms
for emotional cause or causes up that
element derailment also problem it
problematic side of the body is also
very important as well and time of the
symptoms when it gets worse as well so
you know in holistic approach we not
only look at your physical symptoms but
we also look at the time when those
physical symptoms get worse and you have
more problems or trouble with those
symptoms also it’s very important to
know that which side of the body is more
affected is it left side of the body
right side of the body is it crosswise
or it’s shifting from one part to
another part as well so these are some a
fairly basic you know consideration
while we are doing you know holistic
assessment because that is very very
important to decide and choose the right
remedy for the for the patient but the
list is continued and we will be talking
about some more you know approaches
which are very important in an
assessment it’s also very important to
know the mental approach or the
perception of persons towards the
disease or the nature of the person as
well in any medical condition that what
he or she thinks or but sieves about his
or her health or things and what makes
you know his or her mental symptoms
worse or better as well also his or her
addictions or habits their pest level
that are the thirsty that have been
first or they are not Penn State haunted
the thermally feeling that did they feel
what all the time with a few hold on the
time so what is their thermal volume
heat level in the body also as upset
conditions that makes those symptoms
worse or conditions or modalities that
can make those symptoms better so these
are very very important you know sense
impression when we do
you know approach your assessment also
food is very important that if
somebody’s got any particular food
cravings you know it is very important
to know because some people you know
they crave sugar some people may crave
you know salty stuff oily stuff spicy
stuff crisps or even some people you
know they crave certain things which are
undigestible and you cannot easy to
digest them like ro rice clay pencils
chalks even you know coals these kind of
things you know some people crave for as
well so it’s very important to know
those things as well because they can
also represent some of your internal you
know deficiencies or some kind of
abnormalities in the body as well
similarly if you cut any aversion to any
particular food that you don’t like when
you dislike any things you know
completely and you completely refuse to
take that or any phobia or fear and
recurrent dreams even complexion of the
skin is also very important when it
comes to you make a holistic assessment
so holistic assessment is a very
detailed assessment it’s not generally
looking at your physical symptoms of
taking you know your pulse or your body
temperature low blood pressure it is
much more in detail and that gives us
more insight of our you know medical
condition and that really helps us
choosing the right remedy because in a
holistic approach we have to make a list
of all the symptoms and then we try to
match those symptoms with all available
you know remedies whether they are
herbal homeopathic or even aromatherapy
so we try to match the symptoms with the
remedies you know properties as well and
that mostly you know is the best remedy
to start and to feel improvement with
that as well so friends if you like this
video if you like this presentation
please don’t forget to share among your
friend
so leave your comments also you can ask
question if you have any if you want us
to make any specific videos in future

topics as well also you must click the

videos as well and if you need any
holistic natural treatment you can visit
